Find Tachometer Digital in Q&A
Does anybodey know of a digital tachometer: OBD2? Im looking for a digital tachometer that plugs into the OBD2 port and preferably has a shift light.

daddyporky@verizon.net replied: "http://www.tradervar.com/digital-tachometer.htm this site can advise you and replace the bad one ok"

Lover not a Fighter replied: "The more feature you get in a ODB2 scanner the most it cost. Just so you should know (if you are planning on buying high-end ODB2 scanner) - they are planning to come out with ODB3 standard - which kind of makes odb2 scanner useless. Also there's no scanner with SHIFT light. They are not meant to be used while driving & each car has different shift point. === Sears has many ODB2 scanner and you can play with it at sears before buying. Good Luck..."

What is a non contact digital tachometer? what's the use and what it controls? the componets/parts that can be found inside the device. how it used/control. the range of detecting (sensor). how is built and some relevant websites? ***please make my day. thanx

Adi replied: "A digital tachometer generally uses a laser light to detect rotations and calculates the rpm. it uses the principle of reflection of light from a surface. the rotating shaft / teeth has got markings on surface. the device detects the interval between reoccurance of same mark/blank space and calculates the rpm."

daddybear replied: "Hi Lloyd I have used this equipment in the water treatment industry. Basically it is a hand held stroboscope with a calibrated dial which can be locked. I used it to check the speed of pumps and blowers prior to overhaul to see if the maximum speed was below manufactures specification. The drive coupling would be cleaned and a magnetic piece of self adhesive tape put on the coupling. Every-time the strobe hit the tape it would register 1rpm. when the machinery had reached maximum speed the needle was locked for taking a reading. I used to hire the equipment from a specialist instrument company. Maybe if you do a search for instrument hire you may get some more technical information. Hope this helps"

James B replied: "Not a full answer, but this likely uses a magnetized portion of a shaft to sweep a magnetic field past a very close, but not touching, sensor. The sensor could be anything from a coil that has some voltage induced by the passing field to a spin valve type sensor like in older disk drive heads."

Is it possible to install a digital tachometer with a shift light in an automatic car? And if does the it light up when the car shift automatically.

Dash R replied: "Why would you want to? You would have to tap into the transmission computer. Its should be easy enough if you have OBDII...but still..."

sparky replied: "of course it is, it's actually pretty easy if it is a '96 or newer. Automatics from the factory are not set up to shift at point for optimum acceleration they are set up to shift at the smoothest point possible without causing damage to the transmission (slipping). Shifting at the point for optimum acceleration is kinda jerky like a manual transmission. sells an accelerometer that has a built in shift light to tell you when it actually is the optimum rpm to shift, as well as what your vehicle's actual horsepower and torque and many more other figures you probably never knew about. By the way, all you have to do to install a gtech is apply suction cups to glass, and plug it into the cigarette lighter."

Nick M replied: "Listen Speed Racer if you wanna look cool by having a spotlight in your face every shift point first you should start by gettn a manual. Yes you could hook up the tach but what do you need a shift light for when the car shifts automatically? Save yourself the embarassment and dont do it unless you get a manual first."

how to measure engine rpm using a digital tachometer? where do you place the deflector tape?

Robbie N replied: "It needs to go on the harmonic balancer."

I Need To Know If I Can Install A Digital Speed/tachometer in a 93 escort wagon? I Just Bought A 93 FORD ESCORT LX Station wagon and I Need To Know If It's Possible To Install A Digital Speed/tachometer, and if so where to get it...any other information would be helpful also... oh and if it is possible i would greatly apreciate it if someone could tell me how i would go about doing it...

texasm replied: "The tachometer wouldn't be an issue. You would just tap it into the tach wire at the ignition coil. The digital speedometer might be more of an issue since the vehicle has a Vehicle Speed Sensor that you have no way of tapping into. The Vehicle Speed Sensor sends signals to the ECM, and it wouldn't be a good idea to mess with the wiring to the sensor or the ECM."

talon699 replied: "I would be more concerned about making sure the brakes keep working and the floor doesn`t rust out from under you than seeing how fast you are going in Digital, But nevertheless , I would suugest you have a look at some of these sites and talk to like minded people."

digital gas & tachometer wiring on a 05 jeep wrangler? Ok so i've been looking all over the internet but can't find anything of the matter. i got all the wires connected but the wire for the gas (green) and tachometer (yellow) any idea witch ones are the correct wires on this jeep? or do you have a diagram? thanks in advance!

destroyeron13 replied: "The factory service manual or an aftermarket service manual should have the diagrams you're looking for."

jj replied: "The cluster gets all of it's information for the gauges from the PCM (computer) over the two wire data bus, so don't go looking near the dash for the wires. The computer uses the crank sensor output to monitor the engine speed but you might get a better signal from the crank sensor wire (brown/light blue) which is connected to the round on the side of the engine below the plugs. It's only a five volt signal so not sure if it will be enough. Crank sensor is also a 5V signal. If you need a 12V signal you might have to use one of the ground wires from an injector. They are connected to 12V by the ASD relay and are grounded individually by the computer to fire them. The fuel level is recieved by the computer by the dark blue/white wire from the fuel pump sender unit. That wire runs in the wire loom below the drivers door."

A non-contact digital tachometer? does anyone know how to implement a non contact type digital tachometer, the component parts(de ions) needed, the display configuration which can be digital. reading from 1 to 90000 rpm,

my hovercraft is full of eels replied: "Yes thanks, I charge 72 per hour."

RWPOW replied: "You can learn about Hall-effect tachometers by downloading the application note at: You can buy Hall-effect tachometers at: Or you can pay the guy 72 english pounds an hour.. Best of luck..."

Jeff M replied: "You could put a piece of reflective tape on the rotating part and use a light source and a light sensor to detect the reflected light. You would then have to connect the light sensor to a pulse counter and some other electronics to scale the signal from pulses per second to RPM. (Or you could just pay the guy 72 per hour)"

pixi replied: "easiest way would be to buy a bicycle tacho as this is magnetic so there is no contact and it is as cheap as hell to buy,"

Dante replied: "it depends whether you wish to read the speed or synchronise it. if you wish to read it then buy a digital tacho they are relatively cheap and very simple. if you wish to sync it then buy a strobe tachometer. I would recommend paying the dude up top 72/hour for a consultation!"
