How do you make a good exploding volcano without baking soda, explosives, fire, fireworks or mentos? I need to make a exploding volcano with using baking soda, mentos, fire, fireworks, or explosives. It needs to be able to go up and actually explode, not just fizz. Any suggestions?

Turbidite replied: "How about a can of whipped cream with some sort of mechanical device buried with it inside your model. There are some commerical insulation products that expand when injected into a wall. They come in a can and once it touches the air the expansion starts. Go to a Home Depot or store like that."

crackerjacker13 replied: "I'm not sure what you mean be it has to "go up and actually explode." You can make a lava flow volcano using Ammonium Dichromate and if you add some charcoal you'lll get a nice plume of sparks. Here's some instructions"

What are other chemical reactions like baking soda and vinegar; and coke and mentos; and dry ice and water? I just want to know some more chemical reactions... the ones I already know are: coke and mentos baking soda and vinegar dry ice and water and water and acid

ThatGuy replied: "You are going to see a reaction any time you combine an acid with a base, or an oxidizing agent with a reducing agent. The only problem is that these reactions aren't always safe."

are there any good web sites to use for research for the mentos & soda experiment. Other than the mentos site? I haven't had much luck looking on the web for validated info. for this science report. I need to find some info. to help give the report actual facts and proven info. to support the experiment. If anyone has any websites to offer that would be very helpful. I have gone on the mentos web site and wasn't that impressed with what it had to offer, I think we may need more info. than what they had to offer. So any input would be helpful, project is due 2-14-07. Thanks in advance for the info.

caveman replied: "try poprocks in your hoo hoo"

knewbern3 replied: "Try the discovery channel web site. Mythbusters had a try at it on their TV show. You may find something there."

what would happen if you were to eat mentos and drink soda? i know your stomach won't explode [ it takes A LOT more soda and mentos than anyone can handle], but what would happen to you physically?

Paul in San Diego replied: "Go on You Tube and search for "mentos and diet coke". There are some videos of idiots that were stupid enough to try it. Most people couldn't get the diet coke down and just end up spitting it up all over. One guy manages to keep it down. He then falls over like a tree, rolls onto his hands and knees, and does projectile vomiting of the foam. It's worth a look."

Shadow replied: "Very horrible, horrible, things will happen."

Robert S replied: "Nothing, Menthos and Diet Coke mixed will probably give you gas!"

does the type of soda affect the height of the geyser when mentos are added? When I did this experiment, i did it with three sodas: Mountain dew, Root beer, and of course, Diet coke. with seven mentos for each soda the diet coke definitely went the highest. the mountain dew was literally only like, one foot high. Now i want to know why.

ladyk5dragon replied: "It's a reaction between the aspartame in the Diet Coke and the sugar in the mentos."

My Coke Rewards Codes replied: "YES! On the Discovery channel's TV show Myth Busters they proved it has to be Diet Coke! ."

What is the best soda to use with mentos? I origanally done the diet coke and mentos one which seemed to be the highest, I have heard stories about Fanta is the worst one to use and has a height of up to 3 inches. What do u think is the best soda for eruption?

shaggymaster replied: "sprite and dr pepper have been the best"

blamb! replied: "Actually Diet Coke has been used most often. The sugar substitute is what really reacts with the mentos"

2 Hott 2 Trott replied: "the best one to use is diet coke here is a link go check it out.."

it's me replied: "Diet Coke seems to work the best. Although Sprite and 7-up work pretty well too."

| s | replied: "Diet coke really is the best!"

Is the mentos and soda reaction a physical reaction? Most of you say it's a chemical reaction, but on this website it says it's a physical reaction?

NewBeeDood replied: "no chemical"

Caylin replied: "i think its a chemical reaction"

S.W.A.T replied: "In a 2006 episode of MythBusters, a popular television program on the Discovery Channel,[7] they concluded that the caffeine, potassium benzoate, aspartame, and CO2 gas contained in the Diet Coke and the gelatin and gum arabic ingredients of the Mentos all contribute to the jet effect.[8] In addition, the MythBusters theorized that the physical structure of the Mentos is the most significant cause of the eruption due to nucleation. When flavored Mentos with a smooth waxy coating were tested in carbonated water, no reaction occurred, whereas standard Mentos added to carbonated water formed a small eruption, by their claim, affirming the nucleation-site theory. According to the MythBusters, the surface of the mint Mentos is littered with many small holes, allowing CO2 bubbles to form very rapidly and in great quantity, in turn causing the jet of foam. This was further supported when rock salt was used as an effective substitute for Mentos.[8]"

singletrack65 replied: "It's a physical reaction. There is no new compund being created or destroyed. It's the small nucleation sites that help release the gas from the liquid. The gas is not being created in a chemical reaction just released through a physical one."

caitymylady27 replied: "Its a physical reaction. Chemical is when something is being created or destroyed."

How long should you wait to drink soda, after eating mentos? I just ate some mentos and I was wondering how long until I could drink soda. please help!

breegrega replied: "5 hours i guess"

Fernanda replied: "i would say at least 30 min. because all you need is a little air to take all that flavor away"

hoppykit replied: "Anytime, unless you believe the stupidity about your stomach exploding."

Wendy replied: "You can drink your soda right now if you want. Mythbusters on the Discovery channel challenged the misconception that mentos and soda would make your stomach explode. They finally made a stomach rupture but it took more soda and mentos than you can probably handle so you are safe. I cannot find the link on their site but I remember watching the episode."

Sethie replied: "You don't have to wait, dumbass. If the mentos were going to react with anything, it would be the acid in your stomach."

does temperature of the soda matter in a mentos and soda experiment? i need to do a lab and i was wondering of temperature makes a difference. like if its really cold or so warm there's no more bubbles.

H H replied: "I would assume cold temperatures would be recommended, because at warmer temperatures most carbon would have passed."

Andrew replied: "No, it really doesn't matter. I've done it plenty of times with both cold and warm soda, and it doesn't make much of a difference, as the mentos is the limiting factor most of the time."

Mentos and Soda - Does It Make A Difference if You Use Different Sodas? If you use different brands of soda for the mentos and soda project, will it make a difference in the explosion? And if it does, why? (The scientific reason)

devon_flynn replied: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMXPOqovSBs All your questions shall be answered via mythbusters. Saw the episode, they explained it all well"

cookie replied: "I did this for my Science Fair project and it does make a difference. If you use a soda with too much sugar in it, it will cause less of an explosion. Which is why Diet Coke is the best soda to use for this because of the low amounts of glucose it contains."

mykalamonster replied: "The best chemical reaction occurs when you use Mentos (mint or fruit, doesn't matter), and Diet Coke. I haven't tried it with generic brands of soda. Such as, your local grocery store's mock product of coke. But if the soda is only slightly different to actual Diet Coca Cola, it should probably work. Test it, do some experiments. :D"

Obamas Shoes replied: "Yes---the Mythbusters figured all this out."
