why digital camera prices on rediff/sify are cheaper than retail price? Bad quality /defective products? Can any one tell me, how come the digital camera prices on rediff are cheaper than retail price given by the manufacturer? Are they inferior in quality or have some defects?

RJS1121 replied: "I can think of a couple of reasons why digital camera prices might be cheaper on some sites than others. Sometimes online or catalog stores get cameras at discount rates if they buy refurbished or Grey market models. If the cameras are refurbished, there is no telling what had been the reason they had been returned. If they are Grey market... and these are the models you want to stay away from... they have been imported from another country and do not carry a USA warranty. Should something go wrong with them... you have no protection. And a camera without USA warranty will be refused by the manufacturers repair facility, meaning you can never get an upgrade or have it cleaned or anything. If there is a camera you are interested in... don't just order. Find the phone number and call so that you can ask... if the camera is refurbished or do it have a USA warranty. Don't just buy it now and be surprised and disappointed later. Hope that was helpful. :))"

can anyone tell me the best place to buy a digital camera/ best prices? i am looking to buy the kodak p880 or something similar can anyone point me in the right direction for good prices and good service? Thanks!

DillyDallyLama replied: "Costco has good prices but it's a warehouse so no one will give you advice. But the service there in general is good so if you are a member check it out."

Jafar B replied: "hey there... the best brand for digital cameras r these: 1. Kodak 2. Sony 3. Canon 4. Olympos if there is a "best buy" store near ur place... head 2 it & c what u could find, otherwise... go 2 the homepage of those brands... seek out a camera with the specifications that u want... then, try & locate a official dealer which is near u... (Canon & Sony offer that kind of help)... good luck! :)"

fudgie replied: "go to Comet"

natman56_1993 replied: "The best prices will be online, but there isn't much of a service, although there are bound to be FAQs and things like that"

meea replied: "Have you tried ebay?"

inverse_mushroom_cloud replied: "The best place to buy anything (mostly) is a local specialty store. There, you can see the item, hold it, try out the controls, and talk to a sales person who has knowledge of the product. Often, they will come close to the price offered by a larger retailer with know-nothing help."

Keith L replied: "Try looking at this website. I did a lot of research last spring and this web site was very helpful in evaluating features, prices and best place to buy digital cameras. "

Stephen M replied: "Go to a reputable camera store in your area. You'll be able to try some cameras out and see what you like and don't like about the cameras. Stay away from the box stores; staff are not well informed and you can't really get a good feel for the products when they are tethered to a long wire cable."

Gina Rocks replied: "Hi, More shoppers use cheapest prices search engine because almost every merchant is listed there. You get more products and prices and save more time and money. I have used that service for 4 years, they also have a million consumer written reviews."

Ara57 replied: "Be sure to check seller ratings before you buy from an on-line dealer. Many are scam outfits, based in Brooklyn, NY who operate under several different aliases. B&H Photo, Adorama, Calumet are all reputable on-line dealers, no fears dealing with them. Best Buy has a lot of cameras in store so you could handle them and see which ones feel right. Many neighborhood retailers carry the kodak line, shouldn't be too hard to find one! Good luck!"

Do digital SLR camera prices go down during the summer? My dad said supposedly the Nikon D40 I want to buy will go down during the summer. I'm not too sure if that's true or not...kinda doubting it. I'm buying it online.

snapshotphoto replied: "Last summer I purchased the D60. I paid around $650 with a 18-55mm VR kit. That was a pretty good deal. The other day I was looking at what I would've saved if I had waited but prices have not gone down at all. I think it would be worth it to buy now and if you would've saved $15 then that's great. But the truth is the longer you wait to buy a camera, the cheaper it gets because the technology gets older and older. If it was me I would just buy it now. Good luck."

midnite.scribe replied: "This year things are a little different. After the first quarter (end of March) as companies are reporting the lowest profit in decades, they will begin price discounting to move stock and generate cash flow before the end of financial year (June) annual reports are due. I would strongly suggest waiting another couple of months to avoid paying far too much and kicking yourself when you see heavily discounted pricing. This has to happen, in a recession or depression - however you regard it, people stop buying all but essential things - and bargains. If companies want to keep trading, they need to be offering bargains. Already car companies are offering thousands of dollars off new prices in an effort to keep trading. This will spread to all consumer electronics - including cameras."

Tony Choo replied: "Please waiting another couple of months ... but today amazon.com offer the best price and no shipping cost . if you don't want to wait you can reviews on many camera for your budget! i hope that help.."

Nathan G replied: "I got my D40 from amazon for around $470, now, you can get the D40 in a kit for around $430. You don't save much quite frankly. This might sound ironic, but the prices will actually go up. Look at the Rebel XTI, it price has in fact gone up since the XSI has been out. In short, just get the camera now, it's not going to be considerably less expensive in the summer."

where is a good place to buy a GOOD digital camera for lower prices? i need a good, reliable; yet cheap digital camera to take to college. Im looking for something under $200, but still pref. a name brand, and good quality, w/o going onto ebay. where at? any suggestions on a camera itself? preferrably around 4-8mp, and one of the "slim" cameras for portability (ie: in a purse)

Lost Soul replied: "I suggest this one, you can buy it for around $120 or Less!! Canon A460 Specifications * 5 megapixels * Movie mode with sound * JPEG file format * 4x optical zoom / 4x digital zoom * Autofocus * Auto and manual exposure * ISO 80-400 * 2.0-inch LCD * Secure Digital memory (16MB card included) * 2 AA Batteries * One of the few cameras that still has an optical viewfinder. * Can take photos in wide screen mode. I suggest buying it at amazon.com"

AHelpfulFriend replied: "Here is the PERFECT camera for you! You should get the PENTAX Optio W30. Its slim, sleek, stylish, with 7 megapixels, has lots of features like a macro setting for pictures up to half an inch away! Plus its waterproof down to 10ft for 2 hours!! I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 for a few years and I have never had ANY problems with it at all! It is such a great camera and I LOVE it! It has TONS of features, VERY good picture quality, its sleek & stylish. And its waterproof! You can see the camera here:... I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 (a slighty older version) for a few years now and I absolutely LOVE it! (If you half press the button and hold it half way, it gets the camera ready to take a fast picture, then right when you want to take the picture, press the button fully and it takes the picture right away! The camera also turns on in about 2 seconds!)"

PEOPLE in DUBAI: A Question about digital camera prices !? what is the price of digital cameras in dubai now?? For example if I have about 1000 dhms, can I get a good one?? How many Mega pixels will it be?? Is there any website for a store in Dubai where I can check the prices there??

Virgo Boy replied: "yes dear 4 sure u could get some digital camera worth Dhs1000/- i'll personaly recommend to go for PANASONIC, the reason 4 this is tht there r still some models which r orignally from JAPAN. and their picture quality is also good. other than this u could try OLYMPUS, i've found it as well a very nice one. and u could get within ur price range. one suggestion i would give u is this tht instead of browsing through the net, it's better u go and check them physically, coz most of the time on net they r discribing general features and most important thing would b it's shape/designing as per ur convinience. it's buttons and it's actual quality. in dubai............. sorry i'm not in condition to mention where u could get good price, but in abu-dhabi if u r interested i could guide u a bit."

JustAGirl replied: "I bought Cybershot for 700Dhs. You can find the prices in this site Also check this website Digital Cameras starting from 499Dhs."

exponent replied: "I bought a Canon 10 mega pixel camera in the Duty free shop in Dubai. It seemed like a good deal at the time (about 1800 dhm), but I found it cheaper on the Internet when I got back to the U.S. and I have to use a converter to charge it with the charger that came with it. You may be able to get a better deal at the malls ( Deira Central City Mall, for example). However, I did not see any really good deals on common consumer items."

Astrid in Dubai replied: "There are some electronic shops that have their prices online. Check this page: and look at: Jacky's, Plug-ins & CompuMe"

**ArAbIaN BeAuTy** replied: "oh my gosh! u can , they have alot goin on sale right now from 500- and up, i bought a panasonic lumix the other day, comes with all full options memory card, carrying case from carrefour for 799! it used to be 899, but it got discontinued now they made a better updated one to compete with the others, you can also go to the souk il islami in sharjah they have cheaper ones then the malls and camera booths"

getLO0SE replied: "i dont think they have any pink canon ones. those cameras are pink and support breast cancer."

honesthustler replied: "I wouldn't buy a digital camera if I was you. I just bought the Canon DC210 mini DVD recorder for $279. It records to disc plus takes pics too. Fairly small in size. Spend a little more and get two for the price of one."

VINTAGE MUSIC replied: "You might consider the Sony CyberShot DSC-W55."

water_skipper replied: "Just buy a good camera and paint it pink."

Why are digital camera prices on Yahoo! Shopping way less than anything I'm seeing in national chain stores? Not that I'm complaining, but it just seems odd that these seemingly smaller businesses are selling the camera I'm looking at (Canon PowerShot A540) for up to $70 less than what I've seen it selling for in stores like Best Buy, Sears, Circuit City, etc. I am nervous about ordering from these online stores despite their good reviews because their prices are suspiciously low. Anyone know why this is?

daniyals.com replied: "internet sites don't have middle men, or bills to pay, they just add little on top off the wholesale price they get. so the savings for customer is increased. "

D Hayes replied: "Easy - no overhead. They don't have to pay for high priced buildings, parking lots, security, security systems and guards, cash registers, display cases, and usually they have very few employees. All that overhead gets added into your purchase price. If you are worried about making an online purchase, then this is what I recommend. 1-Look at the 'about us' on the website you are considering making the purchase from. Where are they based? (here or overseas) and do they have a phone number? If so - call them and see if anyone answers. Ask them about the product you are ordering (new, used, refurbished) and if they offer a warranty and what their return policy is. 2- Go look up the reviews on the store. You do realize that Yahoo Shopping offers Merchant Reviews right? Reviews written by actual customers that have shopped with that store? You might want to hit Yahoo Shopping and check it out. You can not only get the prices of the item you are looking for right there, you can also check the merchants out and the reviews in one handy area. 3- If you are ready to make a purchase but are still unsure - go to your bank and get a pre-paid Visa or MasterCard gift card. Works the same as any other credit card, however unlike a debit card it is NOT tied to your checking account, and unlike regular cards you cannot run up a charge. Pre-paid means just that - it is good for only the amount YOU decide to put on it (if you know your purchase will come to $78.00 or so, buy one for $100 and use the extra to fill up your gas tank ) I hope the above tips help you shop the internet with an easy mind. Remember, there are some good trustworthy merchants out there. Just do your homework and you WILL find them."

What is a good high quality digital camera? I'm going on a trip to Europe and I'm looking for a good digital camera. Price isn't a problem. I want something really compact, with 14+ mega pixels, and a high zoom. i basically want a professional quality camera that is ultra compact. Can anyone help me out?

Chaniiie replied: "sony cybershot"

Shyam replied: "I would recommend the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS or Sony DSC-W300 for ultra-compact category, but they are not professional ones. For Professional results, use a DSLR, they are not very compact but produce out standing results... Nikon D series & Canon EOS series, specifically Nikon D80 and Canon EOS 20D Actual thing is you can't a get a professional quality camera in the ultra compact category and professionals don't like ultra light cameras. If you are a regular user, high quality camera is the one that pleases you. If you are a professional, you won't be asking...."

Zra replied: "It's hard to find a camera that packs 14+ mega pixels with a compact design. In fact I could only think of the Sigma DP1 and the Samsung TL34 that can meet your pixel requirement and have a small compact form factor. Still, they are as costly as some DSLRs!"

Sam replied: "I suggest Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K 10MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom great quality picture great zoom"

bontylor replied: "Digital-cameras are usually designed to be easy to use, sacrificing advanced features and picture quality for compactness and simplicity; images can usually only be stored using Lossy compression (JPEG). Most have a built-in flash usually of low power, sufficient for nearby subjects. Many compact digital still cameras can record sound and moving video as well as still photograph. In the Western market, digital cameras outsell their 35 mm film counterparts. I have the best & cheapest digital-camera that is of 2.1 MP high quality color image >>>>>"

Should I get my digital camera repaired or buy a new one? I have a Samsung digital camera - price about $300. I dropped it in sand at the beach. Now the lens will not extract (open) as it should when we turn the camera on. Can it be cleaned so that it works? What is the cost to have a digital camera cleaned/repaired? Thanks

Victor replied: "Buy a new one. The price for the other option can be the same if not close to a price of a newer and better one."

dave s replied: "I would have a camera shop look at it. Sounds like it may just have sand in it, that's keeping it from working. But you should really look at some new cameras! Prices are cheap and they are way smaller everyday..good luck."

epic_laydown replied: "sometimes, those camera shops will charge you between 50 and 100 dollars just to diagnose it. That doesn't include the repair costs, so you may spend as much to repair it as spending for a brand new camera. the choice is yours."

Edwin replied: "R.I.P. Samsung. Use it as a paperweight and begin shopping for a new camera. As already stated, repairs will be at your expense and probably cost as much as a new camera. When you get your new camera, check at cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and see if either of them offers a protective cover for it. Buy a nice, wide, comfortable neck strap for your new camera and keep it securely hanging around your neck. In 36 years I have yet to drop a camera."

barney rubble. replied: "cheaper to repaire it unless you can afford a new one.if you have house insurance it may be coverd by that."

TomTom replied: "they charge $150 just to look at the camera plus parts you decide"

Gilbert65 replied: "Search for an authorized service center who will perform a CLA=clean lube adjust. Some centers will fix everything broken for a flat fee."
